Ålesund, municipality and port, western Norway, north of the mouth of Stor Fjord. The site of one of Norway’s largest fishing harbours, it is a base for cod and halibut fishing trawlers, and, together with Tromsø, it is the headquarters of the Arctic sealing fleet. Ålesund University College was established there in 1994 through the amalgamation of three smaller institutions.
